Italian Data Protection Authority, GPDP has directed ChatGPT to immediately stop collecting and processing data for Italian users.
Italy privacy regulator vs ChatGPT
In a statement issued by the Italian data protection authority on March 31, 2023, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been instructed to stop processing data for Italian users until the privacy of their data is guaranteed or well-defined in law.
Garante Per La Protezione Dei Dati Personali (GPDP) says that ChatGPT has not put in place any mechanism to prevent the use of its platform by people below 13 years or minors.
ChatGPT has been given 20 days to respond to the claims raised by GPDP or face a fine of 20 million euros or 4% of its annual turnover.
Is it possible to Block ChatGPT in Italy?
Although it is important for ChatGPT to address the concerns raised by the Italian data protection authority, the hardest questions that need to be answered is how possible is it to regulate the internet based on age? Is ChatGPT supposed to ask every user to upload their ID for age verification? Does this also apply to AI Chatbots and businesses that use the ChatGPT API or technology? Some of the major tech companies that use ChatGPT technology include Snapchat, Salesforce, Shopify, etc.
If it is possible to restrict people from accessing or using ChatGPT based on age, then they can still find the same information from other sources on the web since ChatGPT itself relies on data from the web to learn and generate answers.
