DPReview one of the most trusted sources of digital photography is shutting down on April 10, 2023. Its camera reviews and articles were one of the most reliable sources of information used for making an informed purchase decision.
DPReview Shutdown
After running for 25 years, Amazon has decided to shut down DPReview, a website that was regarded by many photographers and photography enthusiasts as an encyclopedia of photography.
DPReview was founded by Phil Askey in 1998 and grew to become one of the most reliable sources for digital camera information. In 2007, Amazon acquired DPReview.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos indicated that he had been a long fan of DPReview and regarded it as one of the most authoritative sources of digital camera news.
Why DPReview is shutting down
On March 20, 2023, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that they will be laying off additional 9,000 employees to cut costs because of the growing uncertainty of the economy.
DPReview is among the many small brands owned by Amazon that are targeted for closure probably because they do not make financial sense to maintain. Last year, Amazon also shut down the global site-ranking website, Alexa.com (the website is now used for Amazon’s voice AI).
DPReview’s main source of revenue was from affiliate links to Amazon products which were probably not making enough money for Amazon.
Future of DPReview
Amazon has not indicated what it plans to do with DPReview content (Articles, Youtube Videos, and forum). The website will either be closed completely or be archived and left available online as read-only for users.
DPReview fans are requesting Internet Archive or any site crawler to archive dpreview.com for future reference before it goes offline
