etrade has announced that it is introducing SMS two-step verification. Users have been asked to add or confirm their mobile numbers.
etrade SMS two-factor authentication
etrade on April 20, 2022, indicated that they will be enabling SMS two-step verification on etrade.com to protect user accounts. This is in addition to existing account verification and security options like password, VIP access, hardware token, etc.
e-trade did not provide the exact date when this update will go into effect but it is good to make sure that your account is ready for the changes by confirming your mobile number.
If you have used the VIP access or Google Authenticator app to secure your account, then you will not experience any big difference. The sms verification is only recommended for users who have not enabled 2fa or cannot access the 2-factor authentication code using a mobile app.
How it works
Each time you log in, a unique verification code will be sent via text message to your mobile number that you will be required to enter in your browser to log in.
If you do not have a smartphone or cannot enable two-step verification via mobile number, then you can request a hardware token (this is a small physical device, the size of a remote car key, that generates passcodes that you can use to log in).
