Google I/O 2023 search and web updates
Most of the announcements made at Google I/O 2023 about search and web focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Google ecosystem. Below are key highlights of the updates
- AI in Search
Generative AI is coming to Google search to make search results more conversational. It is more like chatting with Google to get correct answers or information without visiting external websites. However, the normal search results will still be available after the AI-generated search results.
Shopping is one example where AI search results would be helpful.

- AI in Google Cloud
Google announced three additional generative AI models to Vertex AI. They are Imagen (for image generation and editing), Codey (for code generation and completion), and Chirp (speech-to-text generation).
Companies can use Vertex AI and enterprise search to easily and privately retrieve relevant information from their databases and websites.
Google also announced that Duet AI will be available on Google Cloud. Duet uses generative AI to provide developers assistance in writing code in the Cloud console or Chat.
- AI in Gmail
“Help me write” is coming to Gmail compose and reply. It makes it easy to reply to emails using AI-generated content without leaving your email.
- AI in Google Photos
Magic Editor is coming to Google Photos. It makes it possible to seamlessly edit photos in Google Photos.
Google also announced that images generated with AI will contain watermarks and metadata. This is part of its responsible approach to AI.
- AI in Google Workspace
Google announced that it will now be possible to use AI as a collaboration assistant across various Workspace apps. For example, you can generate a job description in Google Docs with a few words and prompts. The most exciting announcement is the ability to use AI to generate a spreadsheet inside Google Sheets.
Most of the updates announced at Google I/O 2023 will be launched by the end of the year.
