ICANN has announced that it has launched a new project called Inferential Analysis of Maliciously Registered Domains (INFERMAL) to help prevent malicious domain registration.
ICANN INFERMAL Project
This is an ICANN project that seeks to identify why malicious actors prefer some registrars over others and expand knowledge in this area. The project’s findings could assist registrars and registries in identifying relevant DNS anti-abuse practices, reducing the costs associated with domain regulations, and increasing security levels.
Dr. Maciej Korczyński, an Associate Professor of computer networks and cyber security at the Grenoble Institute of Technology in France, will serve as the scientific coordinator of the INFERMAL project.
The team will collect and analyze domain registration factors that are likely to be preferred by malicious actors or attackers. This includes bulk domain registration, registering domains through API, domain payment methods, price of domain registration, and among other factors.
The project will result in a presentation at a conference hosted by ICANN and other partners. The timelines of the project will be published on the ICANN website.
