With the rise in the use of AI Chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard to generate content, there have been many unanswered questions as to whether Amazon KDP allows AI generated content. As of today, if you read Amazon’s terms, policies, rules, and content guidelines, there is nowhere AI has been mentioned. There is also no single statement that has been issued to prohibit or permit the use of AI-generated content.
Therefore, at the moment, and judging by the books being sold on Amazon, they have no issue with AI-generated content.
Should I use AI to generate KDP Content?
It is advisable not to use AI tools to generate KDP content unless Amazon says they allow it. If the quality of such content starts becoming a concern to customers or some court rules against its use, Amazon has the resources and ability to develop a software that can detect AI generated content. Therefore, you risk your content being flagged by a bot and your Kindle Direct Publishing account being terminated.
Amazon may also decide to start suspending accounts that produce content in mass using AI if there is a significant rise of books with misleading information. A related example is of IngramSpark’s move to crack down on misleading and questionable content. Among the content affected was that created using automated means.
Lastly, it is always recommended to engage in a business that is well-defined in law. If you are not sure whether what you are doing is legal or illegal, then avoid such business. Terms and conditions are there to protect customers and businesses from bad actors.
