Amazon’s KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) has announced that it will be increasing printing costs starting June 2023.
KDP printing cost increase and changes
Starting from June 20, 2023, KDP will increase its printing costs. The KDP says that is increasing the costs in order to align with the current cost of printing books, which has increased due to higher costs of materials and labor over the past six years. The change in fees is aimed at covering the higher costs of materials, suppliers, and labor.
In addition to this, there will be a new fixed and per-page cost for paperback and hardcover books with large trim sizes, which are either larger than 6.12 inches (155 mm) in width or 9 inches (229 mm) in height. However, there will be a decrease in the per-page cost for certain color-ink print books ordered from some marketplaces. These changes will have an impact on royalties for paperback and hardcover books.
KDP has advised authors to update their list prices to avoid any change in royalty payments or zero royalties on paperback and hardcover books where the list price drops below the new minimum list price. If an author makes updates to a print book after June 20, it will need to comply with the new minimum list price to publish the updates.
KDP has provided tools to help authors evaluate the impact of the new printing costs on their royalty earnings. These include a table with new printing costs and a FAQ page. You can also visit your bookshelf to bulk update book prices or down a CSV file of books that will earn zero royalties due to the changes.
